The speciality will usually not be available to select on eRS if search is for urgent referrals.
Support to people living with persistent long-term pain. Chronic pain is rarely curable and will take time for patients to gradually come to terms with. Management in a chronic pain service aims for patients to strive to have the best quality of life achievable in the presence of chronic pain and to reduce its impact on their lives.
Pain for > 3 months duration, that significantly affecting quality of life. Pain that has failed to respond to other conservative measures and, if appropriate, interventional treatment. This includes definitive diagnoses of:
– Persistent pain such as chronic sciatica, low back pain, whiplash
– Facial pain
– Failed spinal (or other) surgery
– Neuropathic pain including radiculopathies
– Fibromyalgia
– Chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
– Headache
– Non-MSK chronic pain diagnoses such as IBS, chronic pelvic pain
- <18yo
- Pain related to active malignancy (please refer to specialist palliative care in the first instance)
- Uncontrolled substance misuse
- Treatment of underlying medical condition is expected to substantially reduce / cure the pain
- Pain with uncontrolled psychosis, active suicidal ideation, severe mental health condition
- Pain is expected to resolve reasonably rapidly or has been present for <3 months duration

Exclusions:
1) A patient with incapacitating disease that is a constant threat to life.
2) A patient who has an unstable mental condition and is receiving psychiatric treatment.
3) A patient who is grossly obese with a BMI >40.
4) Surgery for patients under 18 years of age.

A group-based, rehabilitation programme for the management of osteoarthritis of the knee and/or hip is open to all members of the public. Escape Pain is available across the UK, and is supported by NHS England and Versus Arthritis.
