Familial Hypercholesterolaemia
Condition
Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is an inherited condition that is passed down through families and is caused by one or more faulty genes. It’s caused by a genetic mutation that means your liver is unable to remove excess ‘bad’ cholesterol, known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Having too much LDL cholesterol in your blood increases your risk for developing coronary artery disease or having a heart attack.
There is a Familial Hypercholesterolaemia triage Clinic at UHS under Genetics. This is for diagnosis only.
